WHOOP is no longer just a wristband. The company announced the launch of WHOOP Labs — a service that lets members order blood tests directly through the app. It's a logical move for a company that's always positioned itself as a platform for understanding your body. And it's also a completely new business model.

What Is WHOOP Labs

WHOOP Labs is an expansion of your membership that lets you order blood panels — basically curated sets of lab tests focused on specific health areas. From what's available, these panels will cover things like hormones, metabolism, inflammatory markers, and vitamin levels.

The concept is straightforward: order a test in the app, go to a partner lab for a blood draw, and your results show up in WHOOP — connected to your sleep, recovery, and strain data.

That's the interesting part. You can buy a blood test anywhere these days. But connecting lab values with continuous wearable data? That's something almost nobody is doing yet.

What It Costs

Specific pricing for individual panels isn't public yet. The CNET article that broke the news didn't include numbers, and WHOOP's official Labs page is pretty sparse on details. It's also unclear whether active members get a discount compared to buying tests without a membership.

Once WHOOP releases pricing, I'll update this.

Why This Makes Sense

WHOOP collects data 24/7 — heart rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate (RHR), sleep quality, daily strain. But these are all functional markers. They tell you how your body is responding. They don't tell you why.

Blood tests fill in the other side of the equation. When your HRV drops for three weeks straight and a blood panel shows low vitamin D and elevated inflammatory markers, suddenly you have context. That's way more useful than an isolated blood test once a year at your doctor's office.

For biohackers and people trying to optimize performance or recovery, this could be a genuinely useful combination — assuming WHOOP presents the results well and doesn't just dump a table of numbers without explanation.

What This Means for You

If you're in the US, WHOOP Labs is rolling out now. If you're elsewhere, it's less clear. Lab test regulations work differently outside the US, and WHOOP would need to partner with local labs in each country.

Info

If you're outside the US and want blood work, you can order tests through commercial labs without a doctor's referral in many countries. You won't get the WHOOP integration, but you'll get a solid picture of hormones, vitamins, and metabolism.

If you're a WHOOP user interested in this and it's not available yet where you are, the realistic approach for now is combining WHOOP data with commercial blood tests manually. It's not as elegant, but it works.

Where WHOOP Is Heading

This is part of a bigger trend. WHOOP hired Ami Bhatt as Chief Medical Officer, dealt with the FDA on blood pressure measurement, and now is launching lab tests. The company is clearly moving from fitness tracker toward health platform.

The question is whether users want that. WHOOP built a community around performance — athletes, CrossFitters, runners. Blood tests appeal more to the health-conscious crowd that might not care about strain scores. We'll see if those two worlds actually overlap.

From my perspective: if WHOOP can meaningfully integrate blood results into recovery recommendations (not just display numbers), that's a strong membership argument. If it's just another tab in the app, it won't change much.

I'll be watching how WHOOP Labs develops, and once pricing or expansion plans are announced, I'll post an update.
