
WHOOP Data from Tour de France: What Pogačar's Numbers Actually Tell Us
WHOOP released analysis of 1,400 nights of Tadej Pogačar's data. HRV, recovery, resting heart rate — what can an amateur athlete learn from it?
Tadej Pogačar just won his third Tour de France in a row. His fifth in seven years. A margin of 6:26 over Remco Evenepoel, five stage wins. But you saw that on TV. What you didn't see is roughly 1,400 nights of WHOOP data from his wrist that his team just released. And there are some numbers in there that actually do a pretty good job of showing what those metrics on your wrist are measuring — even if you're not riding 578 hours a year.
Pogačar's Numbers: From Seasonal Low to Tour Start
WHOOP analyzed data from Pogačar and six of his teammates at UAE Team Emirates-XRG. The key moment came after Tour de Suisse, the final race before the Tour de France. Pogačar was at a seasonal low:
- Heart Rate Variability (HRV): 88 ms
- Recovery Score: 43%
Looks bad? For context — 43% recovery is what WHOOP flags as a yellow zone. That's the state where the app recommends you back off. And that's exactly what Pogačar's team did.
At the start of the Tour de France, after a targeted taper (reduced training load), the numbers looked completely different:
- HRV: 121 ms (37% increase)
- Resting Heart Rate (RHR): 38.2 beats per minute
- Recovery: 78%
Recovery jumped 79% compared to the post-Suisse low. And here's the interesting part: the second-best teammate on the identical tapering program improved by only 44%.
What Is "Durability" and Why It Matters
Dr. Jeroen Swart, the team's performance director, sums it up in one word: durability. The ability to perform deep in fatigue and then recover faster than everyone else.
Pogačar didn't show up to the Tour with higher HRV than his teammates because he's a genetic mutant (though maybe a little bit). The key is how quickly and dramatically his body can return to baseline values after extreme stress. Same tapering protocol, same team, same food — yet nearly double the recovery jump.
This is exactly the kind of insight professional teams use WHOOP for. It's not about absolute numbers. It's about individual trends.
What an Amateur Can Actually Take From This
Now the question you're probably asking: what do I do with this if I bike to work and run a 10K now and then?
A few things:
Ignore absolute numbers. Pogačar's HRV of 121 ms tells you nothing about your health. The normal HRV range is huge — it depends on age, genetics, fitness level. My HRV sits somewhere around 55–65 ms and I'm doing fine. Comparing yourself to a professional cyclist is like comparing your salary to Elon Musk's.
Track your own trend. That's the real lesson from Pogačar's data. It doesn't matter that he hit 88 ms after Suisse. What matters is that it was his low point and he could return to his high. When WHOOP shows your HRV dropped 20% from your average, that's a signal — regardless of whether you're at 40 ms or 140 ms.
Tapering works. Sounds obvious, but how many amateurs (including me) roll into a race with full training volume right up to race day? Pogačar's team knew exactly when to back off because they had the data. You can too — just check your recovery trend before a big race or challenge and give your body a few easier days.
Why This Is Good Marketing for WHOOP (and Why That's Okay)
I'll be straight with you — WHOOP is obviously publishing this because it's great marketing. Pogačar won the Tour, he wears our band, here are the numbers. I get it.
But unlike most marketing material, these are concrete, verifiable data points. No "felt better" or "helped my performance." Numbers: 88 → 121 ms HRV, 43 → 78% recovery, 578 hours per season. That's checkable. That's debatable.
And most importantly — the principle behind it (track your own trend, not absolute values, and adjust your load accordingly) works exactly the same for me running three times a week around Prague as it does for a guy who just won the Tour de France. The numbers just look different.
