WHOOP 5.0 Finally Got the Display Upgrade Fans Have Been Waiting For
WHOOP released a major software update for the 5.0 in May 2026—new display features and improved functionality. Here's what changed and why it matters.
WHOOP 5.0 got a significant software and firmware update in May 2026 that changes one of the device's core features—it finally unlocks a functional display on the band itself. This isn't a new hardware generation (no WHOOP 6.0), but an update to the existing 5.0 that delivers on what the community has been asking for since day one. Here's what changed and why it matters.
What Exactly Changed
WHOOP 5.0 launched with a small touchscreen, but its capabilities were limited from the start—basically you could only see your recovery score and daily strain. The community has been asking for more since the beginning. This update finally delivers.
According to Gear Patrol, the May update brings these changes:
- Expanded metrics on the display — Beyond recovery and strain, you now see resting heart rate (RHR), heart rate variability (HRV), and battery status right on your wrist without opening the app.
- Live heart rate during activity — Finally. This was probably the most requested feature. When you're running or training, you see your real-time heart rate directly on the band.
- Improved haptic feedback — Vibrations when you hit your strain zone or complete a workout.
- Faster navigation — Redesigned gestures for scrolling between screens.
Important note: this isn't new hardware. If you own a WHOOP 5.0, the update should download automatically via Bluetooth when you sync with the app. No new purchase needed, no upgrade program.
Why It Took This Long
WHOOP was always primarily about the data in the app. The "no display" philosophy defined the 3.0 and 4.0—and plenty of users (including me) saw that as an advantage. Less distraction, better battery life, cleaner design.
But when the 5.0 arrived with its tiny display, expectations shifted. People naturally expected the display to do more than show two numbers. And WHOOP apparently needed time to add these features without tanking battery life.
Based on my experience with the 5.0 over the past few months: battery life dropped roughly half a day after the update (from about 5 days to 4–4.5 days with normal use). It's a tradeoff I can live with—especially thanks to the clip-on charger you don't have to remove.
What This Means for US Users
Practically? Three things:
-
You don't need to pull out your phone during training. When I'm running or doing a CrossFit workout, I don't want to check my phone. Live heart rate on your wrist is exactly the feature I used to envy on a Garmin.
-
Morning check without the app. You wake up, glance at your wrist—HRV, RHR, recovery. Done. No unlocking your phone or waiting for a sync.
-
No extra cost. This is a software update. If you're already paying for membership and have a 5.0, it's included.
The update is rolling out gradually. If you don't see it yet, check your firmware version in the app (Settings → Device → Firmware). According to Gear Patrol, it should be available to all 5.0 users by the end of May 2026.
Does This Close the Gap with Competitors?
Let me be honest—live heart rate on a display is table stakes in 2026. Garmin, Apple Watch, and Polar have offered this for years. WHOOP isn't catching up here; it's removing a disadvantage.
But that's fine. WHOOP was never meant to be a smartwatch. Its strength is sleep analysis, recovery algorithms, and telling you straight up whether to take it easy or go all in. The display is a bonus, not the core product.

Bottom Line
The May WHOOP 5.0 update adds live heart rate, expanded display metrics, and better haptic feedback. It's not revolutionary—it's a logical step that should have come sooner. But it's here, it's free for existing users, and it genuinely improves daily use. Thumbs up from me, even if I have to account for that extra half day of charging now.
